My cat is on 4-week antibiotics. What should I be watching for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 16 yr. old cat has a creat of 4.2 and elevated white blood cells, including neutrophils. I've been given 2 oral antibiotics for her to be given for 4 wks. I'm concerned about the downside of taking antibiotics for 4 wks. although I do give her probiotics. Can you tell me if there is something I should do while she's on this 4 wk. treatment. Thank you so much

Aside from monitoring your cat for inappetance, vomiting and diarrhea as possible side effects from antibiotic treatment, there isn't anything else that you should be doing. Probiotics can be useful to maintain normal GI bacterial flora, but be sure to time the administration between doses of antibiotics or they will be ineffective. Many infections require a long course of antibiotics for resolution, so don't worry about the length of the treatment course. Continue monitoring your cat for inappetance and increased drinking and urination due to the elevated creatinine level.
