My Papillon has weak back legs, falls, and is incontinent. Is it IVDD?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

My papillon woke up one morning unable to use her back legs. Vet told me it might be IVDD and gave me steroids and muscle relaxers. 2 weeks with no improvement They told me she wouldn't walk again. She started dragging herself around, weeks later she was walking again. It's a weak walk, her legs will cross sometimes and she falls. Her legs will also start moving randomly when she's sitting and she loses control if you scratch her back. Incontinent too, urine and feces. What could be wrong?

I'm sorry that Eevee is having such problems! It is certainly likely that she is experiencing a problem with her back such as IVDD, as that would cause compression of the spinal nerves leading to difficulty using her legs as well as urinary and fecal incontinence. I recommend having x-rays done on Eevee's spine. This can help confirm if she does have IVDD. Should she have it, surgery is the recommended treatment.
