Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 6 lbs
My cat has been severely biting, scratching, etc. ever since we adopted him, from a shelter. The vet hasn't Found mites but has given antibiotics, eye drops, (several skin scrapings), and finally new food. He is Still really itching. Can a cat have scabes or mange without finding the mites?? If so, how can I convince the vet that it might be this?? My cat needs relief. Thanks, Kris

That sounds very uncomfortable for Coconut! I'm glad that he's already seen a vet to start managing this problem. Itching in cats can be due to a number of causes, as I'm sure you're aware. Certainly mange (Demodex or Sarcoptes mites), fleas, and allergies to food or environment are some of the biggest culprits. It is still possible that Coconut has mites, but with several negative skin scrapes, I would be surprised if that is the case. You can start by applying a high quality flea preventative (Advantage or Revolution) once a month, if you haven't already. Some cats are allergic to the saliva in a flea bite and can become intensely itchy even after one bite. If your vet is concerned about food allergies and has started a novel protein or hypoallergenic diet, these can take 2-3 months to fully take effect. Be sure not to give other treats or table scraps and solely feed the new diet. If Coconut is still itchy despite these measures, please schedule a recheck with your vet to discuss using corticosteroids. However, this would be contraindicated if mites are present.
