My dog is in heat. How to prepare, what to buy, and how long?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 18 days old

My pup just got her first period at eight months, almost nine, how will I be prepared for the next time she has it? Should I have anything for it like wipes and such? How long does their period usually last?

I would keep on hand some doggy diapers to help collect the bloody discharge. This will help protect your furniture and household items from getting stained. You can also stock up on some puppy wipes to help clean her up and keep her from developing odors. The menstrual cycle usually lasts 2-4 weeks on average. Best of luck with your pet Nala.
