My dog won't eat, is skinny, and lethargic after his brother died.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chow Chow | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 30 lbs

My dog will not eat at all if I bring a bowl to him he runs away. He never use to be this way he use to be the first one to eat all the time. However, just recently his brother (my other dog) passed away just recently. But he is extremely skinny and will not eat he just lays around.

If he has lost weight and is lethargic than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have a dental problem, infection, parasite, metabolic/endocrine disease, etc. and your vet can run lab work and take an x-ray, if needed, to help determine the cause. If it caused by stress and anxiety from losing your other dog than your vet can prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone to see if that helps.
