Why is my dog panting and nesting after drinking pond water?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 35 lbs

My two year old wheaton terrier is panting and frantically nesting. It just started this evening. She is usually very calm. We went for a big walk today and she drank out of a duck pond. She has been eating and pooping normally . I took her outside after she started seeming so stressed because sometimes she wants to eat grass but she just still seemed stress and alternated searching around and hiding under my tent trailer.

Poor Flea! Given the suddenness of her symptoms, I would be concerned that she may have ingested something toxic. The duck pond could have contained an algae that is toxic to dogs, and she ingested it when drinking from the pond. Without seeing her in person, I can't say this for certain, but it is concerned she is panting and unable to stay still. I would take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now so that the cause of her symptoms are diagnosed and treated.
