Can I spay my 4-year-old cat? Is she too old for the surgery?

I want to get my cat spayed but she is 4 years old and has never mated before. Should I get her spayed or will there be any complications since she's old now?

At 4 years old, Bella is still a young cat! Since she has experienced numerous heat cycles, spaying will not reduce her risk of developing mammary cancers. However, it will prevent pregnancies and eliminate her chance of developing a pyometra, which is a serious uterine infection. I wouldn't anticipate any significant complications post-operatively, provided that her pre-operative exam and lab testing is within a normal range.

    Great question! Absolutely you can get her spayed now, and it's brilliant you want to do it. Four is not old at all, and while any surgery can have it's complications, it is a routine surgery done by vets. I highly recommend having Bella spayed.

    It is best for health reasons to have then fixed unless you planned on breeding. Generally you can wait until she is about 5-6 months old so she will not be so small for the procedure. I would recommend having a feline leukemia and aids test along with blood work to check the liver and kidneys prior to anesthesia to nake sure there are no underlying problems that can complicate the procedure or recovery. If you elect to not have surgery, you run the risk of kittens, cancer or an infected uterus. An infected uterus will require emergency surgery and cause extreme illness

It's possible for her to have her first heat cycle anytime after four months of age, but it normally occurs around six months. She would have to be in heat in order to accept the male and get pregnant, but you should be aware that this can happen anytime now. It's important to have her spayed prior to her coming into heat, because the procedure is more risky when they are in heat. They also tend to fight with other cats when they are in heat, which can increase their chances of getting serious infections and contracting FIV and/or FeLV. You should get her spayed, no questions about it, there is no high risk in having that surgery done at her age, she is still very young and it is a very simple surgery. cats are in very high risks of mammary gland tumors if they are not spayed and this condition is almost always fatal.

Unless your cat is a purebred and an excellent example of her type that will improve the breed by reproducing, I recommend she be spayed as soon as possible. Not only will you prevent a litter of unwanted kittens, you will reduce her chances of illness or injury due to her getting out of the house to seek a mate, you'll also eliminate her getting a life-threatening uterine infection and greatly reduce the likelihood of her developing breast cancer in later life. Two years old is fine for her to be spayed, the younger they are the less chance they have of developing hormone-related health conditions.

Great questions! At four months old, Oreo is old enough to be spayed, and I highly recommend getting it done. Even though she doesn't go outdoors, having her spayed will have significant health benefit for her. It prevents her from developing mammary tumors, 90% of which are malignant in cats. It also prevents her from developing a pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus that requires spaying her to treat along with antibiotics. It also helps you avoid the very annoying behaviors that accompany a cat when they are heat. They are VERY vocal, demanding of attention, and cry all hours of the night. Trust me when I say you don't want to deal with this behavior, as cats cycle frequently certain times of the year, and it's a problem you will have to deal with on a regular basis. I would call the vet on Monday to set up an appointment to get her spayed. Good on you for wanting to do it :-)

My cat has 2 weeks left of her pregnancy and I asked a vet when I should spay her after she had the kittens and he said when the kittens are 3 weeks old because she'll go into heat again while she's nursing so it would be best to spay her 3 weeks aft
You can spay a cat while the kittens are nursing, the vet can avoid the mammary glands. The vet is right that Bella can go back into heat quickly, and you don't want more kittens. If your vet is comfortable doing this, and the kittens can start weaning after three weeks, I would trust your vet. I hope this helps!

At 4 months of age you still have a few months to decide before she will be old enough to have it done anyways. But there are several health benefits to staying her. It can decrease the chance if manmary cancer in the future... if cats get mammary tumors it is 85% cancerous and aggressive. It will also decrease the risk of an infected uterus which can lead to sepsis and death if not caught in time... the treatment is an emergency spay! You will not have to deal with a cat in heat.. they are very loud and clingy and attract males from outside. There is little chance her personality will change from this procedure and the health benefits are worth it

When is the best time to get my cat spayed? Should I even do it? She's been in heat 3x already and she easily calms down, doesn't bother anyone or try to get away.
Since Baby is over 1 year, she can be neutered any time now. I would recommend that she is neutered for medical reason, first the high risk of developing mammary cancer which is malignant in cats and second uterus cancer and/or possible uterus infection. Think about her future health, the answer will be clear. Hope this helps !

Will a pregnant 4 month old kitten be able to care for her kittens when they are born
Bella may have difficulty feeding the litter as she is still growing herself. Confirm that she is indeed pregnant first. Your veterinarian may be able to do this via palpation or abdominal x-ray. If it is early enough, consider having her spayed for her health and safety and to prevent unwanted or accidental litters in the future. If you decide to leave her intact, she will need to be monitored closely throughout the pregnancy, delivery and raising of the litter until weaning.

I've a 7yrs old Persian cat, never breaded. Recently diagnosed with vaginitis & her vet recon spaying once she is cured. He mentioned the risk of developing mammary tumors in cats, & cats should be spayed during the first 6 months of age to reduce it
Great question! Yes, it is true that spaying a cat greatly reduces their risk of mammary tumors when it is done at a young age. Unfortunately spaying them later in life does not reduce this risk. That being said, it's something that I do recommend having done. Cats who aren't spayed are at risk of developing a pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and spaying the cat is part of the recommended treatment. It often costs thousands of dollars to treat due to it being an emergency, and a very delicate and difficult surgery. It's best to have her spayed now; not only will the procedure be much cheaper (hundreds vs thousands of dollars), but it will prevent her from developing a pyometra. I highly recommend having your cat spayed once her vaginitis is cured. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Personally I think she is getting very close to being too old. I would have an exam and bloodwork done by your Vet. If everything comes back fine then you can try. I wouldn’t breed her 10 or older and would spay her as soon as you are done. I hope this helps!
