Is hair loss normal for senior dogs, or should I worry about baldness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered

My senior dog (not exactly sure of age, at least 15) has started going very bald. It started with his tail, which is now completely hairless (it was once very fluffy) , then moved onto his back, then onto the top of his head, both of which are almost totally bald. Is this a normal thing for a dog as they get old, such as male-pattern-baldness in humans? Or is it something I should be worried about? He's otherwise fairly healthy, aside from not being as energetic as he once was. Thanks! ~Jessie

HI Jessie! Hair loss with age is not normal in dogs and is generally a sign of another disease process. There are many possible causes of Dexter's recent hair loss, including some endocrine diseases (Cushing's disease or hypothyroidism). I would recommend having him examined by your local vet who will be able to perform lab testing to evaluate his overall organ function and thyroid function (CBC, blood chemistry, thyroid panel, urinalysis - as a starting point).
