Why is my unneutered dog's scrotum skin black, flaky, and raw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 85 lbs

My golden retriever is 4 1/2 years old. Not neutered. His testicles have a layer of blackened, dead skin that flakes off. When I attempt to pull of the large hanging pieces he gets very uncomfortable. His licks himself often. Has been like this for a while, but it seems to have gotten much worse lately. His skin underneath appears to be red and raw.

It sounds like he could have a bacterial skin infection and may need an antibiotic. Have your vet take a look at him to determine the cause and prescribe medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or corticosteroid to help. You could aslo bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-soothe, to see if that helps.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh goodness! I am not sure, you probably know better, if the black pigmented areas are normal on his scrotum. If not that looks like tissue necrosis from vasculitits, frost bite, burn, insect bite or self trauma (orchiditis). I would take Toby in to the Vet before the weekend. If he is licking then he needs to wear an E-collar to prevent continued self trauma. I wish you the best
