Puppy ate almonds & chicken bones, vomiting but playful. Is she sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 11 days old | 3 lbs

I have a shih tzu poodle mix puppy. Her name is Belle she is 3 months old. I gave her some almonds but she threw up. Worried I looked online if dogs can eat almonds & I read that they are unable to digest them properly. So basically she just needed to throw them up. She threw up about 4 times. She showed no signs of sickness. She was happy and playful. My nephew fed her chicken bones today. So she can chew on them. She swallowed one but just threw it up a while ago. Is my dog sick?

It could be a combination of both the almonds and the chicken bones. It is never recommended to give your dog cooked bones, even to chew one. They easily splinter in the GI tract, leading to perforation of the GI tract as well as obstruction. They can cause serious damage to Belle's intestines, and can break teeth as well. I would not give her a chicken bone again. Given that she was vomiting but is still happy and playful, you can try a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
