My puppy has brown diarrhea after I disciplined him. Is it stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 15 days old | 7 lbs

My 4 month old puppy peed and ripped up my papers. I had just gotten home and I spanked him and put him in his crate. He squirted a little watery diarrhea with brownish-maroon color. Did I stress him out he pooped that color or is it something else

It is likely the stress caused Jack to have this little bit of diarrhea. I would caution you against spanking him when he misbehaves. It doesn't teach him what he did was wrong, it can make him frightened of you. I would also caution against using the crate as punishment. It's supposed to be a safe space for him to go into, and if you use it as a punishment, he will think every time he goes into it, he's in trouble. When he does misbehave, I would tell him no and put him in time out, such as in a play pen or another room. That way, he doesn't associate the crate with punishment.
