My 12-week kitten has a red, puffy, watering eye. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat that's 12 weeks, and has gotten a puffy eye and sometimes it starts watering. It's also a bit red. Could it be pink eye possibly? He can see fine out of and has plenty of energy. Should I see a vet right away, or wait a few days.

Young kittens often get conjunctivitis. It's not pink eye (meaning it's not contagious to you), but it may require medication from your veterinarian for clinical signs to resolve. It does not sound like an emergency, but I would schedule an appointment with your veterinarian within the next several days if clinical signs have not resolved or certainly if they worsen.

I would definitely see a vet right away. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Your kitten could have an eye infection, but he also could have injured his eye. Have him seen by a vet right away to have his eye examined and diagnosed so it can be treated. I hope this helps!

No, this won't go away with time, and Loki has to see a vet immediately. He could have an eye infection or could have suffered some trauma to his eye. Any eye condition should be considered an emergency, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into a vet right away, who can diagnose and treat his eye symptoms.

Poor kitten! If you can, it would really be best to have him seen by a vet tonight, even if this means that you need to go to an emergency clinic. An eye problem like this is not usually life-threatening, but severe eye infections can sometimes cause permanent damage or even vision loss if they are not treated promptly - so the sooner he can see a vet and get started on medication to treat the problem, the better. If you aren't able to take him tonight, I would take him to your regular vet first thing in the morning. In the meantime, you can use a warm washcloth or cotton ball to gently clean away any discharge from the eyes to help make him more comfortable.

Thank you for providing a picture of the kitten! It looks like he could have an eye infection or may have injured his eye. He will need to see a vet immediately for this, this is not something that can be treated at home. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. This kitten will need a health check as well, given it was found abandoned. Please take him into a vet right away. Good luck, I hope this helps!
