Why do my dog's rice-like worms keep returning after deworming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 63 lbs

My dog has little rice like pellets stuck around private area under her tail. I googled it and they said it was tape worm that sheds and they get stuck on the hair as they exit. She also occasionally has roundworms. I give her the de-wormer treatment but they always come back. I've had her since November and this is probably the 4th time I'm going to have to give her the de-wormer treatment. Is this normal? Or is something wrong since the worms keep coming back?

Great question! You are correct that Sassy could have tapeworms based on your description. Tapeworms require praziquantel to treat, which is available by prescription only from your vet. The OTC deworming treatments won't have that medication in it, so that's why it isn't working. I would have Sassy seen by a vet tomorrow to get Drontal (it contains praziquantel). It is an excellent deworming treatment, and also kills roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms in addition to tapeworms. Sassy will need another Drontal two weeks after the first treatment to kill all the tapeworms, and then she should receive it every three months. I hope this helps!
