Two dogs, blood on carpet. How to tell which dog is bleeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cairn Terrier | Male | 3 years and 8 months old | 19.6 lbs

We have two dogs and noticed a bloody spot on carpet. Neither shows any signs that they have been bleeding, but it must have come from one. I took one dog to vet yesterday after he had been licking self in genital area previously and panting. Paws were not warm though and no signs of dehydration. Vet examined dog and found nothing wrong. I think it was that dog that bleeding came from, yet I can find no evidence on him it came from him. What do I do?

You can try bringing the other dog into the vet for a health check just to make sure that dog isn't bleeding. I get how hard it is to tell which animal may be bleeding where you have a couple of them, as I have a few animals of my own. Otherwise, I would keep monitor them and the carpet. If you keep seeing blood spots, it could be coming from the genital area, which can be a sign of a UTI or bladder stones. At that point, I would take them both back into the vet for blood tests and a urinalysis.
