My dog has a growing, scabby lump and thinning hair. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old

My dog had a small bald patch under his chin when I got him just over a month ago, it has now turned into a raised lump with a crusty scab over it and is getting bigger, it bleeds slightly in the mornings as though he's been scratching it and also seems like he is getting small patches of thinning hair the corner of his mouth. He also has small lumps that look like white heads on the front of his muzzle. He is a 3 yr old Siberian husky, I'm just a little worried as the scabby lump is growing

It is possible that the crusts and scabs on Sebastian's muzzle are due to infection from bacteria in his food bowls. Plastic and ceramic bowls are very porous and can harbor significant amounts of bacteria. If you aren't already doing so, switch to stainless steel bowls and wash them after each feeding. Also try washing the lesions with a gentle hand soap once daily, but be sure to thoroughly rinse and dry the lesions. If the scab worsen or aren't improving in another week or two, consider taking him to your local vet for further evaluation.
