My cat's tail is dead and cracked. What if I don't amputate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 10 months old

My cats tail has died at the end after being paralysed for many years and has the cracked ring around it. Is amputation necessary? What would happen if this was left untreated?

Amputation is strongly recommended. With no blood supply, the affected area will die and begin to necrose (rot). This opens the door for infection. Serious systemic infection can develop if it spreads to the bone.
