How to help my dog overcome fear after being scared by a loud noise?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Earlier today my dog was frightened by the noise of garbage bins in the backyard and hid in an elevated bush area we have and after we finally found him and he came out, he's been extremely fearful of everything, won't go to the backyard, isn't doing any of his normal biting (which is heavy usually), and seems lethargic. What can I do to make him feel more safe?

Poor pup! One of the most important things to do is not comfort him. While you may think you are helping him by comforting him, you are acting telling him it's ok to react this way and are reinforcing the behavior. I would put him in a quiet dark room of his own to self-soothe, and when it's time to go outside, take him out on a lead. Acting normally, and he should relax following your lead.
