My dog has parvo. Can my cats get parvo too? How do I keep them safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog was diagnosed with parvo this morning. He got treatments at the vet and I was sent home with IV fluid to give to him. Are my cats safe from parvo? Can they catch this from him? Do you know what I can help do to prevent my cats from getting sick?

I'm sorry your dog have parvo! There is some evidence that unvaccinated cats can catch this from dogs, but it's only under extreme circumstances. As long as your cats are fully vaccinated, they will be just fine :-) If they aren't fully vaccinated, I would keep your dog quarantined from your cats. Even those it's very rare for cats to get it from dogs, it's best to be safe. I hope your dog feels better soon!
