How to confirm if those black specs on my pet are flea dirt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 67 lbs

I was wondering if my pet had fleas even though a vet said he didn't. He doesn't itch overly much and we apply monthly treatments. I just found a few specs of dirt maybe ten on his head but wasn't sure if it was flea dirt and he also has dandruff. I don't know if it's my OCD or what but I just really need reassurance thank you

The way to know if Jake has flea dirt is to comb some of these specs of dirt onto a paper towel. Put a drop of water on one of the flecks, and if the paper towel underneath has a reddish stain, then it is flea dirt (flea poop contains water). If you don't see a reddish stain, then it's just dirt. I hope this helps :-)
