My dog's eye changed color and is bloodshot after playing. Emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature American Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 12 lbs

I threw a ball for my Austrailian Shepard dog inside the house and when he came back, he was blinking. His eye over a few hours turned from blue to green and then brownish red. He's had it irritated before and was prescribed eye drops. When I put them in his eye went blood shot! Red! I'm so worried and my vet isn't opened on the weekend.

Oh dear! It sounds like Barrett may have injured his eye somehow. Without being able to examine him, it's hard to say how serious this is or what kind of treatment may be needed. Eye problems like this do need to be diagnosed and treated promptly, since there is a risk of permanent damage or vision loss with any delay in treatment - because of this, I would really recommend taking him to an emergency vet tonight to have this checked. If you call your regular vet's office, their voicemail message should have contact information for your nearest emergency clinic, or a doctor on-call for emergencies.
