Why is my dog so skinny, shaky, scared, and flinches when sleeping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 18 days old

My dog is very skinny but eats a lot, constantly shakes when he's standing still, eating or going to the toilet. Very scared all the time. Flinches a lot when he's sleeping.

Poor Lucky! It certainly isn't normal that he is very skinny despite eating a lot. In a puppy, a very common cause of this can be intestinal worms. If he isn't up to date on his deworming treatments, I would get him one right away. Panacur is a good deworming treatment that is available OTC. He will need a second treatment two weeks after the first one in order to kill all the worms. He should then be dewormed every three months. If he's up to date on his deworming treatments, I would have him seen by a vet for a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis to diagnose the cause of his skinniness so he can be treated. Chihuahuas are a very nervous breed, so it is common that they shake a lot and act scared. He could be reacting to dreams causing him to flinch while he sleeps.
