My senior dog has aspiration pneumonia. When to consider euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chow Chow | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

My 14 year old Chow has been in the ICU with aspiration pneumonia for three days. She seemed to get better the first day, but regressed and had to be put on Oxygen last night. She has bad arthritis in her hips, but otherwise is in decent health for her age. The ICU vet has said that if she recovers, the recovery would be long. I don't know what to do. I love my baby so much, but do not want to make her suffer. Is it time to let go? In general, what are the chances of her recovering?

So sorry that Mandy is having this problem. Knowing the cause of the aspiration pneumonia would be helpful in making the decision. It definitely could be a long recovery as aspiration pneumonia is very serious. You could give her a couple of days before making a decision so at least you know that you tried everything. If she doesn't make a significant improvement in a couple of days than it might be time to consider euthanasia, especially if she seems to be suffering.
