My puppy has an umbilical hernia. Is it genetic? Will it shrink?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have been informed that my chihuhua puppy has a umbilical hernia. The breader has never had a pup with this before. Dose this mean it's not heredity? Her vet said its small and soft so will shrink? I'm concerned as I haven't come across this before and had no intention on having him done.

Umbilical hernias can be genetic, so it is possible there is a genetic link. It is not recommended to breed from a dog with an umbilical hernia due to the possible genetic link. Some hernia can close spontaneously before the puppy is six months of age, but if it is not closed by there, then it should be closed surgically.
