Cats and dogs age faster than humans, however cats age a bit differently than dogs. At the first birthday, a dog of any size will be roughly 15 in human years. At age 2, they are all about 24 years old. Then they all age about four human years for each dog year until they reach the age of 5. After that, size, breed and lifestyle affect how a dog ages. Cats age similarly to dogs in the first two years but in year 3 of a cat's life, he/she will be about 32 in people years, and at age 5, will be between 36 and 48 years in "human years." Again, breed and lifestyle are major factors in how a cat ages. Outdoor cats live far shorter and more difficult lives than their indoor dwelling counterparts.
