My dog's anus is red when pooping, then it looks normal. Is this okay?

This is pretty normal. I wouldn't worry unless you notice excessive licking of the area or scooting which could mean anal glands are clogged. That would require expressing from a professional groomer or veterinarian.

Hi and thanks for your request. Certainly anal glands physiologically release some fluid when dogs defecate. Usually if the fluid is of small quantity and defecation is normal, there is nothing to be worried about. Clear fluid is normal.

His anal glands may be full again. Normally, they are expressed during the act of defecation. You are quite brave to do it on your own! Not many pet parents would do that. If you feel comfortable doing it again, do so but gently. If the problem persists, you will have no choice but to seek veterinary attention. Clinics and veterinary ERs will see patients. If left untreated, Scooby could form an abscess which is very painful and may require sedation to lance and drain. My dogs anus is red and swollen he keeps licking it
Red’s anus does look irritated and I can see some redness on the underside of his tail as well. He might be licking due to irritation from full anal glands, parasites or allergies. I would recommend having your vet examine him and check his anal glands. They may want to check a stool sample as well. Oral or topical medications might help. I would recommend putting an e-collar on to prevent licking until you can get to the vet.

Poor Willow! Some dogs can experience pigment changes over time or with chronic inflammation. It's quite possible that the darkening of Willow's anus is a relatively normal change. As you've mentioned, scooting commonly occurs with full anal glands. I'm glad that you have a vet appointment scheduled for her. Your vet will be able to perform a rectal exam to be sure that everything feels normal, as well as empty her anal glands. It should be ok to wait 2 days since that's the next appointment. Full anal glands certainly aren't an emergency, but sometimes the anal glands can become impacted, infected or rupture, which would be a more urgent problem. If you notice any significant swelling or redness on her hind end, I would try to have her checked out sooner. I suppose that it's possible that she could have a perianal fistula, but these occur most commonly in intact male dogs and are often quite red and oozy. It's far more likely that her anal glands are simply bothering her. I hope that

It's worth getting it checked out with your vet, in case he has picked up an intestinal parasite or has some irritation in his lower GI tract. That the blood is red means it's fresh, therefore being shed very low in the GI tract or his rectum or anus. It may be anal glands that are inflamed, there are a few possibilities. Your vet will do an exam, some labwork, and based on these results will be better able tot ell you what is going on and the best treatment options for your dog.

Hi there and thanks for posting. Certain shampoos or sprays may irritate the skin and anus especially if she has a history of sensitive skin. Sometimes the groomers will express the anal glands as part of their grooming routine. If that was the case, sometimes there can be a small amount of inflammation afterwards especially if the anal sacs were very full. She may also have a skin infection or infection of the anal sacs as well which may be unrelated to the grooming. My dog is having difficulty defecating and has a very red anus and it seems to be irritated and losing fur. Any thoughts?
He may be scooting on his rear due to his anal sacs being full or from intestinal parasites causing itching in the area. I recommend an exam to check and express his anal sacs. They can get full and become itchy and infected if the fluid isn’t emptied. Usually dogs express some of this fluid when they defecate but the opening can become plugged and the fluid builds up and can become infected. Dogs with tapeworms can have tapeworm segments come out the anus and be around the fur by the anal opening. This can cause itching and make the anal opening inflammed. You can give canned pumpkin with wet food and green beans to increase the water and fiber in the diet. That can help with the constipation. I do recommend an exam and have them empty the anal sacs. Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.

It looks pretty normal but the coloration is difficult to assess in the photos. I would just monitor the area and if it seems like he is having diarrhea, scooting his butt on the ground, etc then I suggest you have him checked by your vet.

The brownish red anus is likely due to the underlying gastritis/inflammation of the gut and the repeated defecation due to the diarrhea. The straining to defecate is probably because Tango is empty from having so much diarrhea. (Poor guy!). You should follow the bland diet directions provided by your veterinarian. There is no need to go to the ER vet now. However, if the diarrhea does not resolve within the next 24 hours despite the bland diet, you will need to take Tango back to your veterinarian or to the ER vet if your regular vet is unavailable.

The contents of the anal glands can be lots of different colors. Abnormal material is red (blood) or yellow/green (pus). If Luna isn't painful when defecating, licking her bottom a lot, or scooting her hind end on the ground, it sound like this is normal discharge. Anal glands are scent glands that normally empty with a bowel movement, so that's likely why you're seeing this tiny amount of discharge both shortly before and after she poops. Keep an eye out for any changes in her behavior, appetite, energy level, and licking or scooting of the hind end, as these signs could indicate problems.
