The problem is usually the reverse, using dog flea treatment on cats. Cats are more sensitive to some ingredients than dogs. Your dog should be fine, especially if it is one of the products that is used on both species, just the dosage is different. If it is a product meant for cats exclusively, I suggest calling a pet poison helpline, such as this one: http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/contact/

Usually flea treatment shouldn't cause an issue with those medications, but I recommend checking with your veterinarian just in case, as the drugs in flea treatments can vary and may have different drug interactions based on the active ingredients. I recommend you give your vet a call with the brand of the product you intend to use on Buddy and have them check for you.

I am sorry to hear about Elijah. The name of the flea product may help us better answer your question. Some cats are very sensitive to certain drugs that are used for fleas in dogs, so if the medication is not specificallly labeled for cats it could be a toxicity. If he is twitching/trembling, acting drunken, excessively drooling then I would recommend bringing him in to the vet right away. Some cats also are sensitive to the topical products even designed for cats and can cause irritation of the skin https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=6386334 . Bathing with dawn dish soap can help remove the product and you can contact your vet for an oral flea prevention such as Comfortis, which is much more effective than a spray.

Usually cat flea treatments are not harmful to dogs. Dog flea treatments are, however, harmful to cats in most cases. Often cat products are used for small dogs because of their size. It depends on the product. Since I don't know which product you used it is difficult for me to say much more than that. If you would like to post again with the name of the product you applied we can maybe help you better.
