Why is my dog's diarrhea suddenly back after two antibiotic courses?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has had two courses of antibiotics for diarrhoea. She finished second course two days ago but it seems to be starting again. Why could this be?

The antibiotic she has been given may not be as effective as another one might be, she could be recontaminating herself from contact with her own feces or the source of the original infection, or with contact with another animal in her environment that is also infected. I recommend getting her rechecked with your vet and possibly getting a culture and sensitivity done on her feces, to identify the organism responsible for her diarrhea and what antibiotic is most effective.

Submit a stool sample to your vet to rule out intestinal parasites. Feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Consider using probiotics as well. Plain, canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) can also be used to firm up stool.
