Hello, my puppy is 5 months old and currently losing his baby teeth. His canine tooth just broke in half today. Is this normal? What should I do?

If you're talking about the baby tooth, as long as he isn't in pain, it should be okay. Give it a day or so, if it doesn't come out on its own, get him in to see your vet. If the remnant stays in, it can cause the adult tooth behind it to become crooked or trap food and cause decay.

Baby teeth do sometimes break off during play or other activities, especially when they're in the process of coming out naturally. This is normally not a concern at all, since the broken piece of tooth will be pushed out by the adult tooth coming in behind it over the next few days. Just keep an eye on the area for any swelling, discharge, or excessive pain - in rare cases, it's possible for the broken piece of tooth to become infected before it falls out, which may require antibiotics or even removal of the broken tooth by your vet.

I see that Brixy is five months old, and that is the age when he is losing his puppy teeth. This is normal for puppies to lose their teeth at this age, and his adult teeth should grow in to replace them. Because one tooth came out due to your brother pulling a cord that he's been biting, I would have him seen by a vet to make sure the tooth root still isn't stuck in his gums. I would call the vet to make an appointment to have him seen. Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There isn’t a picture attached but if it looks like the baby tooth is cracked and part may be still under the gum they usually do fine! Most of the time the root resorbs. Very rarely would it cause a problem with the adult tooth or cause an abscess. I hope this helps!
