My dog has diarrhea after grooming. Could it be stress-related?

Hi I just got my dog groomed yesterday and she started having diarrhea it started about 4pm she goes a little bit the size of a quarter

If she gets stressed out about being groomed it could be just a stress colitis. If she seems fine otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours, but let her have water. At the end of 12-24 hours, give her a very small amount of her regular food. If all goes well, give her a little more 30-45 minutes later, continue this way until she has had her normal meal amount. If the diarrhea continues, or if she starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, refuses food or shows any other adverse symptoms, get her in to see your vet as soon as possible.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Delta. I would recommend talking with her veterinarian today if they are open. They may need to see her, but other times you can just drop off a fecal sample. Stress can cause a bacterial imbalance in the gut. This can perpetuate the diarrhea. Parasites are also unfortunately common in pups. You do not want to miss something that may have been coincidental with the grooming. I would recommend feeding her smaller more frequent meals in the meantime as this. will be easier on her gut. You can also add a reputable probiotic such as Fortiflora or Proviable. This will repopulate her gut with good bacteria. I hope this information helps!

It may be stress from the groomer that is causing Thalia's diarrhea. It could also be that the groomer gave her a treat she has never had before causing it. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. He may be experiencing stress colitis which is diarrhea secondary to stressful events (ie. boarding, grooming, etc). When this occurs, it can resolve on its own, but other times a secondary bacterial imbalance develops in the gut. This can require an antibiotic to treat. Since the diarrhea has recurred despite your treatment at home, I recommend that he see his veterinarian. He will likely need fecal testing and a medication. I hope this information helps!

The diarrhea could be from stress, antibiotics, something she ate, a parasite, or an infection. If she is otherwise acting normal then you could withhold food for the day and then try a small amount of a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice tonight. You could also add a probiotic (Proviable, Fortiflora, etc.) to her diet. If the diarrhea resolves continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then slowly transition back to her normal food. If the diarrhea continues and/or she starts vomiting, has a decreased appetite, or becomes lethargic then she needs to be examined by a vet.

Hello, sorry to hear about Meeko. It does indeed sound like he could be dealing with a little of stress colitis. You can offer him a bland diet for the next 3-5 days consistent of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. If this does not improve his stools, or if he continues to have worsening urgency or blood in his stools then he may need anti-diarrhea medications and should be seen by his veterinarian. It definitely sounds like something is going on with Phoebe. The vomiting and diarrhea are very vague signs and could indicate several different diseases that could be going on. Based on your description of what is going on I would be suspicious of a viral infection in Phoebe or she may have gotten several treats that she isn't used to while at the groomer that have now upset her tummy. I would recommend withholding food for the next 12-24 hours. If she is still sick after fasting then she needs to go to the vet. She may need blood work and/or X-rays performed and your vet may recommend fluid therapy if she has become dehydrated. Your vet can also prescribe some nausea medication to help stop the vomiting and antibiotics and a probiotic to clear up the diarrhea. I hope Phoebe is back to herself soon!

He could be stressed from his grooming appointment or picked up an infection somewhere. His veterinarian will examine him and likely perform fecal testing. My dog stayed in a daycare kennel all weekend, she got home last night and threw up everything she had ate and tried to drink water and threw that back up. Her stool is runny also and every time we go outside she tries to poop and nothing comes out..
Poor Addie! Stress can certain cause an upset stomach in some dogs, so it's possible that this could be the problem given that she just returned from a boarding kennel. If she is acting normal otherwise, you can try withholding food for the next 12 hours to give her stomach a chance to settle, then feed a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days until things are back to normal. I'm afraid that by law, we cannot recommend any kind of medication for any pet (even over-the-counter meds) without an exam - but I can tell you that I don't find any OTC meds particularly helpful for GI upset in dogs. Withholding food and a bland diet are usually the best things to do :) If she continues to vomit even though her stomach is empty, or if she develops any other symptoms such as acting lethargic or not wanting to eat, I would recommend taking her to the vet for treatment as these can be signs of a more serious problem.

I wouldn't be worried yet. Give her a day to get reset after the stress of going to the vet clinic. If she's still out of sorts tomorrow evening, give your vet a call to set up an appointment. Many dogs get mild diarrhea when stressed (such as after being boarded, having lots of family in town, or simple vet visits). If Harley is otherwise ill (not eating, lethargic, bloody diarrhea, vomiting), then I'd recommend getting her back to the vet tomorrow, or even an ER clinic tonight if she's getting worse quickly.

You could also add a probiotic, like Fortiflora or Proviable to her diet. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues then she needs to be examined and treated by a vet. Your vet can run some tests to help determine the cause and then prescribe medications to treat the vomiting and diarrhea. She may need an anti-vomiting medication, antibiotic, dewormer, etc.
