Why does my dog rub his nose on the floor around his food bowl?

My dog has been doing this thing where he will put his nose on the floor and rub it back and forth. He only seems to do it around his food bowl.

What he's doing is probably instinctively trying to cover his food. Some dogs exhibit this behavior, which is perfectly normal. If you put down a paper towel, he may try to use that to cover his food.
