My cat is hiding after her vet visit. Is this normal, how long?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat was given a series of vaccines yesterday. She has become very shy and wants to hide from me. Is this normal and if it is, how long will it last

Your cat is most likely reacting to the "trauma" of going to the veterinarian, rather than the vaccinations. This is not an uncommon reaction for some cats. She may be shy or skittish around you for a day or two post-vet trip but should start to calm down if you leave her alone and give her space to recover on her own. (Some cats do take a little longer.) As long as she is still eating, drinking, and using the litter box appropriately (both urine and feces), then she should be fine in time. However, if she stops eating or drinking or using the litter box, you need to contact your veterinarian.

She probably is a little worried that the same thing might happen again to day. Be patient with her, offer he a favorite treat or toy and let her come to you, don't try to pull he out of he hiding place. As long as she is feeling okay otherwise, eating, drinking, eliminating normally, just let her settle in peace. If she's hiding because she's ill, then get her back in to your vet as soon as possible.
