My dog's fur is brown where she pees. Is it a UTI or urine stain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello. The fur surrounding the area where my female dog urinates is brown when it should be cream colored. She is spayed. Thank you.

The brown is cause by the urine. Urine staining isn't uncommon and unfortunately there is not much that can be done about it

Your dog may have a lower urinary tract infection. Symptoms can include frequent urination, an urgency to urinate, discolored urine, and painful urination. Some dogs may also leak urine, staining the fur around the ano-genital area. Urinary tract infections can lead to bladder stones called struvite crystals, as well as a lot of misery for your pet. A definitive diagnosis can be made by your veterinarian with a physical exam and urinalysis (analysis of the urine). Plan to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian soon.
