My dog's heart is racing, paws itchy, and belly swollen. What's wrong?

My dog heart is very fast, he is continually licking and chewing on his paws. He won't stop. He is also very swollen in his gut.

A sudden onset, rapid heartbeat is something that should be investigated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. The licking and the chewing may indicate that he is extremely itchy, perhaps from some kind of exposure to an allergen, a new cleaner in the environment, even a food allergy. Itching can cause anxiety, which in turn could be responsible for the rapid heat rate. The swelling in his belly could be due to gas, or any number of other conditions. The symptoms may or may not be caused by the same problem. Your vet will do an exam, blood work and x-rays to determine the cause of the illness and suggest an effective treatment plan.
