Why is my dog panting when it's not hot? Is it an ear infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 5 years and 6 months old

My dog has been panting for the past hour, calm panting though. It's not hot and she has water so why? She does have an ear infection so maybe that?

An ear infection can cause panting, because of the pain and discomfort, it is possible that this is causing this. If the ear is not under treatment, I recommend taking her to the vet and get the infection treated.

Panting is a quite generic sign. It can be caused by pain/discomfort but not so commonly an ear infection (unless very severe) can cause such an acute pain. Stress and respiratory problems can cause panting as well. A check up at your vets will clarify the underlying cause. Ear infection can be treated anyway and if already on treatment the efficacy of it could be checked and eventually modify.

Just coming into heat would not normally be associated with panting (although mild behavior changes are possible). I would keep her cool and well rested with plenty of fluids - if she develops any additional signs of fever such as reduced appetite or lethargy I would recommend an urgent care visit

A heatstroke in the UK at this time of the year is not really possible, so it might be something else. possibly pain or discomfort. if the panting at rest continues you will have to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked.
