I would suggest trying a large variety of foods to try to entice him to eat. You can boil some chicken for him or even offer him turkey or boiled ground beef. Dogs will go without eating for extended periods of time when they have conditions like renal failure, but it is very important to get them eating again as soon as possible. You can try several varieties of canned food as well. If your dog still refuses to eat you may need to take him to the veterinarian for an appetite stimulant and fluids.

While a prescription renal diet is ideal, in my personal experience, if they are refusing to eat it all together, getting SOME nutrition in -whether its rice and boiled chicken, canned dog food that he likes, or whatever it may be--is better than being completely anorexic. If you've not yet tried an appetite stimulant, ask your vet. There is a medication called entyce that can be helpful in these guys. Mirtazipine is another medication that can be used as an appetite stimulant.

I recommend consulting with a veterinary nutritionist. They can help you by providing a recipe that will account for your dog's dietary needs and medical conditions. If you go to the website of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, they have a Diplomate's Directory that will provide you with the names and contact information of veterinary nutritionists that can help you.

The best management option for a dog with kidney failure is prescription kidney diet, which us proven to extend quality and length of life. The higher proportion of these specialist diets, preferably wet food and increased fluid intake the vest chance of stabilisation. Diets formulated for senior pets and additional supplementation depending upon abnormal blood values can be helpful but a full assessment of regular blood tests is needed to guide this approach effectively

Hello. Honestly, there is nothing better than using one of the prescription renal diets. Have you tried Hill's Prescription stew versions? When a pet will not eat a prescription diet, I have them take the regular diet ( either dry or canned ) & put the daily amount in a glass jar. To this, add just a small amount of the new food & put in the fridge overnight. This allows all the flavors to meld. Each day, add just a little more new food while removing the same amount of old. I do not care if it takes 2 months or longer to switch a dog over, eventually, they will accept the new food. Please give this a try. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
