My dog ate underwear. Will it pass or get stuck? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old

Also my dog ate the crotch of my thong. Will that pass or will it get stuck? My other dog that passed was fine. Any signs I should watch for?

Underwear can get stuck in your dog's GI tract. If it does, that requires surgery to fix. If Maxine ate the underwear less than 2 hours ago, take her to your vet to induce vomiting to try to get it out. If it's been longer than 2 hours, you will need to monitor her for signs such as vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, and lethargy. Those signs can indicate the underwear is stuck in her GI tract, and she will need to see a vet immediately.

Seeing that your dog is a large dxog, it is likely that this will pass. However, if he ate it recently , ie less than 2 hrs ago, I suggest you take him to a vet or pet ER , so vomiting can be induced and he will expel it. If it has been longer than that, you should watch for diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy and in case of these signs appearing, take your dog to a pet ER as the material can cause an intestinal obstruction.

It may or may not pass on its own. You may see anything ftrom difficulty breathing and attempts to cough or vomit to diarrhea (loose stool escaping around the obstruction), straining to pass stool, restlessness, etc. If you dog exhibits any unusual signs, I would suggest taking him to an emergency clinic today.
