To express a dogs anal glands you require gloves and a demonstration on how to do so. Failure to be shown how to do this will most likely result in you agitating your pet and potential harm to yourself. Gloves are always worn, KY jelly is typically used, a paper towel to catch the contents of the anal glands, and proper technique to milk the glands empty through the rectum at the 4'clock and 10 o'clock position.
