We are still learning about COVID-19, but the short answer is no, there is no current indication that pets catch this virus and become sick from it. It has been isolated from an asymptomatic dog, but they're still not sure if the dog was truly infected (allowing the virus to replicate) or if the dog was simply carrying the virus much as a table could have the virus on it if someone sneezed nearby. So, while we cannot answer with 100% certainty since this is still a new virus and we're still learning, the current answer is no. I am not worried about my own pets or my patients catching the human coronavirus. Dogs and cats carry their own strains of coronavirus that are very different from COVID-19.

That is a great question. Upper respiratory infections in cats are highly contagious. If one of your friends has a sick cat at their home, they can spread the infection to your cat if they have any contamination on their hands or clothes. Your cat can also contract an infection if they are in close enough contact to any outdoor cats that are sick, such as a sick cat sneezing near your open window, etc. You can picture children on a school setting and how easy it is to spread a virus...it is the same with cats.

Hello. Please do not worry about this. While coronavirus was cultured in the nose of a few dogs that lived in homes with infected people, they were, & stayed completely normal. Nothing has been described in cats. Just about every species has its own coronavirus unique to them. It is a very unique set of circumstances that PRESUMABLY allowed the virus to jump from animals in China to a human host, no worries about this happening in our pet community. So yes, the feline coronavirus can mutate to a virulent form that leads to FIP, but the thing to remember is this is an enteric, or gut virus, not a respiratory one that we are seeing in people. Generally feline and human viruses do not transfer between each other, and it is highly unlikely a cat can get norovirus. If they did, it would not be the same symptoms as you see in humans. There is some limited research suggesting that dogs can carry strains of the human norovirus but it is thought unlikely that the dog will exhibit symptoms of the human norovirus. If they do become ill, it's more likely an unrelated gastroenteritis. I hope this helps!

In general, viruses are species specific. However, with this being a new virus (or so they believe) it cannot be known at this time if the virus can make the jump between species. I recommend to take the same precautions with her as you do yourself. I hope this helps.

Parvo is a species specific virus and cats cannot get the dog version of Parvo. Cats do have their own version of a cat Parvo called Panleukepenia.
