Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog died but his leg started twitching violently also his mouth opening and closing, then let out three loud moans before dying. What happened?

These are the typical signs of a dog dying, The twitching may just be reflexes, and the mouth opening and closing is the unconscious brain which is not getting oxygen (because the heart already stiopped beating) telling the lungs to breathe. But, at that time the dog is already dead. I am sorry for your loss.

It is possible he had a seizure. He may have been having seizures without you knowing it (while you were out, asleep, etc.). You can request a necropsy (post mortem exam) from your vet but this does not guarantee finding the cause. I truly am sorry for your loss.
