Why is my 5-month kitten still nursing her fixed mother? Will it stop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 months and 11 days old

My 5 month old kitten keeps nursing on her mother. They both have been fixed. Is the kitten getting anything and when will the kitten quit.

the kitten is not getting any milk if that's the question, it's a common behavior which is usually discouraged by the mother. In your case the mother obviously allows it but I wouldn't worry about that, even if it carries on for a long time.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Babies find comfort in suckling and nursing. At 5 months Bacchu should be weaned. I would spay the mother or separate the 2 so the mother can dry up. If you aren't going to spay the mother I highly recommend neutering Bacchu by 6 months so they do not have kittens. I wish you the best!
